Introduction
👋 Welcome to the ekko Climate API docs!
This is where payments meet sustainability, and where you’ll find everything you need to bring that into your product.
Our guides, SDKs, and API reference will help you embed real-time carbon insights, contributions to climate projects, and impact reporting into everyday transactions.
Think of it as adding a new layer to payments. A feature your users can see and interact with straight away.
Let’s get started.
Consumers care more than ever about sustainability. 85% of shoppers choose where to buy based on brand ethics and half of consumers say they’d live more sustainably if companies made the information clearer.
ekko was built to help. The ekko Climate API gives banks, PSPs, orchestrators and consumer-facing payment brands tools to make sustainability part of everyday transactions. As a visible, simple feature that builds trust, engagement and growth.
Who is ekko?
ekko is a platform that makes it easy to add sustainability into customer journeys.
We embed sustainability seamlessly into payments, so consumers see the carbon footprint of their purchases and can choose to contribute to environmental projects they care about – from restoring forests to conserving wildlife and preventing ocean plastic.
Every payment, purchase, or interaction becomes a touchpoint that builds trust, loyalty and differentiation.
With ekko, you can:
- Show consumers the carbon footprint of their purchases in real time
- Give clear, relatable equivalents (e.g. “That’s as much carbon as a tree would capture in 2 years” or "Using your mobile phone for 27 hours")
- Give them a chance to compensate for their carbon footprint or support projects they care about
- Provide sustainability incentives or loyalty
- Track impact transparently with auditable records, so you can reconcile the impact
- Build experiences that make sustainability simple, visible, and rewarding
Why now?
Customers already expect brands to act on sustainability. For most businesses, though, action is hard to show in a way that feels real.
Too often, efforts sit in ESG reports and are invisible to the people whose loyalty they're trying to earn. ekko closes this visibility gap.
Whether you’re a PSP serving merchants, an orchestrator enabling ecosystem-wide innovation, or a B2C brand like a bank or BNPL provider, sustainability can become part of your core offering and experience.
What you can do with the ekko API
The Climate API is purposefully flexible to power a variety of use cases. A few examples:
- ekko in basket → give customers a preview of their impact as they shop and the option to contribute, before they even reach checkout.
- ekko in checkout → show the footprint of a purchase in real time and give customers the option to add a contribution to certified climate projects before they pay.
- ekko post-purchase → let customers see their transaction's impact after checkout, and choose to act through a small contribution.
- ekko in BNPL → build climate insights into the initial loan journey and further instalments, so users see their footprint over time and can support projects as they repay.
- ekko in banking apps → add a sustainability layer to account or card journeys with footprint dashboards, tangible equivalents, and contribution milestones.
Integration paths
There are various ways to integrate with ekko. You can:
- Use our Checkout SDK for a plug-and-play experience directly in your checkout flow
- Use one of our post-purchase SDKs for a hosted, post-purchase sustainability journey
- Integrate directly via API for full control and custom experiences, such as
- Sustainability incentives
- Round ups for impact
- Monthly carbon footprints and other insights
For more detail and guides for each path, have a look at Integration paths.
